Is Roundup causing you to get cancer?

In 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO) concluded there is a probable link between the widely used weed killer, Roundup, and cancer in humans. However, the maker of Roundup, Monsanto, was likely already aware of these risks and might have actively kept the information from public knowledge.

As a result, a California jury recently ordered Monsanto to pay $289 million dollars in damages to a school groundskeeper for causing his cancer, and he is likely not the only one. There are currently over 8,000 similar lawsuits going on in the United States against Monsanto.

Why does Roundup cause cancer?

Roundup’s main ingredient is glyphosate. Glyphosate is a chemical herbicide, or weed killer, that that farmers use to kill unwanted weeds and plants. Unfortunately, these chemicals can absorb into your ground water and leave residue on the plants you eat. While it is a point of contention in the farming community, the WHO and other environmental activists believe glyphosate toxins are extremely dangerous to human cells and consider glyphosate a probable carcinogen, or cancer-causing compound.

Who are the people at the greatest risk?

While farmers, landscapers and other workers who are breathing and spraying Roundup at their jobs encounter a greater risk of inhaling the toxins, the rest of the population is at risk as well. Not only can people ingest Roundup through plants and water, but through the animals that eat contaminated plants as well.

Studies find glyphosate is increasingly showing up in human systems. In a 2016 study, over 90 percent of people presented with glyphosate levels in their urine. Additionally, studies are finding glyphosate in American mother’s breast milk is significantly greater than women in Europe.

What can you do to protect yourself?

Unfortunately, Roundup is the most commonly used herbicide in the world, so it can be hard to escape. The most common cancers associated with Roundup are typically leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and multiple myeloma. It is important to educate yourself on the symptoms of these cancers, if you believe you have been exposed to Roundup. Most symptoms tend to include swelling of lymph nodes, night sweats, fatigue or unexplained weightless. While most states do not have time limits to bring a cancer-related claim against the makers of Roundup, it is important to check with your state to be sure.
