Most Common Sexual Abusers

Those in Hawaii who commit sexual abuse of children come from all racial, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. Often, they seek out jobs that give them close access to children and put them in a position of trust and authority.

At the Law Office of Brian K. Mackintosh, Ltd., my mission is to be an advocate for adults in Hawaii living with the trauma of childhood sexual assault. As a trial lawyer, I work to hold my client's abusers accountable, along with the institutions that failed to stop the abuse.

Who Are Sexual Abusers Of Children?

Contrary to popular belief, the majority of childhood sexual abuse victims knew their abuser beforehand. Often, pedophiles will "groom" their victims, gaining the trust of the child and his or her parents. They will gradually increase the level of inappropriate behavior so that the victim may not even realize at first what is going on. Once the abuse becomes overt, the abuser will use manipulation and threats to stop the victim from revealing it to anyone else.

The most common sexual abusers include:

  • Catholic priests and other clergy
  • Teachers
  • Coaches
  • Scoutmasters and other youth group leaders
  • Family members

Tragically, the organizations and groups these predators worked for in the 1960s, '70s and '80s frequently did little or nothing in response to accusations of sexual assault. Unfortunately, that practice still continues as institutions try to protect themselves and their reputations. As your attorney, I will draw on my courtroom experience to hold these institutions legally accountable.
